Introduction of the Department

The Department of Geography, one of the largest science departments of the college, was founded in 2015. The Department offers both Honours and General courses and in the coming years Geography will be taught both as a Major and Minor subject.

The intake capacity of this department at present is 64 students in honours and 32 students in general courses. The capacity has doubled since inception.

The vision of the Department of Geography, Shahid Matangini Hazra Govt. General Degree College for Women is to become one of the best departments of Geography in India.

About the Department

The department is equipped with all modern facilities and apparatus in line with the newly introduced CBCS & NEP curricula. At present the department is having two teachers. The teacher-student relationship is the key to the glorious past, successful present and promising future of the department.

It has four fitted out laboratories, namely Analog Cartography lab, RS & GIS lab with internet facility, Pedology & Geomorphology lab and Climate & Environment lab, three large class rooms, one seminar hall and one smart digital classroom. The classroom are large spacious with well-fitted furniture and good ventilation system. Light Tracing tables are kept in every room. Maps and other necessary tools for teaching learning are there in every classrooms. The department possess all the required instruments, drawing tools etc. Various models, different specimens of rocks and minerals are displayed in a proper way.

The department provides all the items and necessary help to its students to fulfill their requirements.

From the Desk of HOD

Welcome to the Department of Geography. The department is one of best among the Geography departments under Vidyasagar University. The students of our department have scored very high marks in all their Unversity Examination from its inception. Our mission is to raise our students as a complete human being and to prepare them as a contributory human being for our society in future excelling in their respective fields of study.

The two permanent faculties of this department are meticulously engaged in teaching-learning process with traditional and modern audio-visual aids, maintaining the academic standards.

Teachers explain each and every part of the syllabus in a very detailed way. Regular class assessments and explanations are done. Other than regular classes, student Seminars are arranged frequently so that they can express themselves properly. Groups are prepared to work on small projects, preparation of wall magazines. Group presentations are also arranged.

The department thinks discipline is the key to success. Attendance is strictly noted and students need to submit proper explanations to clarify for the leave of absence. The department is also compassionate with their students and counselling is also offered in special cases to overcome social hindrances causing barriers towards education. We believe that the success of the department lies in the friendly interactions between the students and the teachers. Thus, the students feel free to express their personal problems with the teachers.

Short educational trips conducted to nearby places like Kolkata Museum, Planetorium, Palaces of local kings, Handicraft industries, help the students to discover new aspects in their life. The department also arranges movie shows, documentary shows, shares news articles of special importance with the students which make them grow as a human being and introduces them to the world outside their syllabus.

Short career counselling programs are arranged both online and offline to empower the students to make choices for the future and explore their areas of interests. Teachers guide the students and take special classes for the preparation of CUET, WBCS and other competitive examinations.

Students are divided into small group based on their regular assessments and special classes are arranged to fulfill their particular needs. We encourage the students to take part in various extra curricular activities and to participate in different competitions within or outside the college. Cultural programs like Freshers welcome, Farewell, Teachers Day, and Reunion are celebrated in a grand fashion every year.

We, at the Department of Geography, Shahid Matangini Hazra Govt. General Degree College for Women, are committed to nurture every student and empower them to explore their full potential for serving the society as a whole.
